Expectations for Environmental Education Center


Environmental issues are now becoming daily matters. Many organizations are doing ecoactivities all over Japan. Such activities are the results of the efforts of many people. At schools, however, how many teaching materials for environmental education are there? As is often the case with high school, most conservation activities are not held by general high schools but only by high schools of agriculture or technology. This is a problem to be solved. The system of education is such that less emphasis and placed on environmental awareness as compared to other subjects. The expectation for environmental education would be much higher. But we should not deal with it as an independent matter. Because environmental education is, as it is often said, found in great diversity and mixed with all subjects of the school system, We should pay attention to environmental issues in all classes. We should also classify and apply them in terms of environmental education. Hence, for the sake of implementation of environmental education, we should modernize the each subject and select it carefully. Moreover, one of the aims of environmental education is to cultivate the vitality of students for environmental conservation activities. The more we consider present issues of environment, the more we tend to pay attention only to such kind of activities. However, environmental education should not always deal with such activities. Though it may be difficult, it is very important for us to make students realize that they are both respons>ible and victims of environmental destruction, and teach them about our surrounding environment using the present results of science.
