The United Nations passed a resolution to begin the “Decade of Education for Sustainable Development” (DESD) from January 2005. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a dynamic undertaking which envisions a world where everybody has the chance to benefit from quality education and to learn the lifestyles, behaviors and values necessary to build a sustainable future. ESD should enable local communities to address to global challenges such as environmental protection, fulfillment of human rights, and promotion of economic justice, including poverty alleviation. Concretely speaking, we will take actions to jointly promote ESD by enhancing partnerships among educational institutions, local people and governments, NGOs and businesses. Education here includes formal, non-formal and informal education.  In the Greater Sendai Area, we start from carrying out education for realizing a recycling-based society coexisting with nature.

The United Nations University (UNU) proposes the concept of a Regional Center of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCE) as a means to promote the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD), 2005-2014. RCE is a network of existing institutions of fomal, non-formal, and informal education mobilized to jointly promote ESD at the regional/local level.  UNU will designate five to ten RCEs by the end of 2005, and the Greater Sendai Area is a candidate region of one of the initial group of RCEs to be launched.
